I am writing this post to show the power of short Brandable/Pronounceable domains. When it comes time to select a name for your company this style of picking a name that has no meaning is sometimes the best option, it’s somewhat of a clean slate. It is now virtually impossible to attain a descriptive domain like Match.com so creativity is a must.
I started buying up 5L and 6L brandable/prounounceable domains a few years ago because I saw the growing trend in web 2.0 startups and established brands as well. Another benefit in the growing social media craze are Vanity URL availability for sites like Facebook.com/YouBrandsName, twitter.com/YourBrandsName and YourBrandsName.BlogSpot.com etc. When it comes time to pick your companies name be sure to also run a check on these vanity URL’s using sites like NameChk.com. Having these extenstions locked up really solidifies and adds crediblity to your brand. Prospects expect to find your company simply by typing a .com after your name and likewise for social media sites like FaceBook.
My site Pemet.com doesn’t necessarily mean anything to me persay but I thought it was fitting to brand my company using one of my 5L domains. I found out later that “Pemet” actually means Trees in Albanian which is kind of fitting for a social media marketing and web design company.
Below are just a Few of the top 500 Alexa traffic ranked sites that use a 5 or 6 letter Brandable Domain name. Notice other popular trends like the random r in Flickr and the i that apple made famous. When these companies started out, there names didn’t mean anything but now they mean a whole lot.
